About Rarelight

Rarelight Archives began with a simple obsession: old paper is full of people who have been forgotten.

A letter turns up on eBay. A name is written across the bottom of a certificate. Someone saved an obituary, a photograph, a business card, or a handful of correspondence for a hundred years, and somehow it survived long enough to land in front of me.

I want to know who they were.

Rarelight is where I research those fragments and tell the stories I find behind them. Sometimes that means following one person through census records, newspapers, city directories, court records, family histories, or whatever else the paper trail turns up. Sometimes it leads somewhere remarkable. Sometimes it leads to an ordinary life lived through remarkable times.

Those are often my favorite ones.

History tends to remember presidents, generals, industrialists, criminals, celebrities, and people who had enough money to make sure their names survived. Most people don't get that treatment. They leave behind smaller evidence: a signature, a letter home, a marriage certificate, a photograph nobody labeled.

Rarelight is interested in that evidence.

The shop will eventually offer original letters, documents, photographs, and small archives that I have acquired and researched. But the objects aren't really the point by themselves. What interests me is the connection between the paper and the life that produced it.

This is a place for following those connections.

History, found in the margins.
